Petition against the closure of Cornwall’s Minor Injury Units (MIUs)
There are 13 Minor Injury Units (MIUs) in Cornwall, They are in Bodmin, Camborne, Falmouth, Helston, Launceston, Liskeard, Newquay, St Austell and Stratton (Fowey and Saltash are currently closed) as well as one each at West Cornwall Hospital and Treliske. Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group, who commission services for the people of Cornwall, propose reducing this number from thirteen to four.
These four MIUs will be renamed Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs). The only MIUs likely to become UTCs are in Penzance, Camborne, Truro and Liskeard. The other MIUs will close, meaning those hospitals are likely to close and be sold off, although this won’t benefit Cornwall or its residents as all profits from sales will go to central government pots. The resulting lack of healthcare provision throughout Cornwall will leave many outside reasonable travelling distance. This will cause serious delays in assessment and treatment. There has been a lack of public consultation about these proposed changes. We the undersigned oppose the closure of our MIUs in Cornwall; they are an essential resource and reduce increasing pressure on Treliske and give us a local service that we want, need and use in order to maintain good health.
This petition will be presented to The Cornwall Council and the KCCG Board on 5th June 2018. |
