Kevin Neil - Our Parliamentary Candidate in 2017
Message from Kevin

A big "Thank you" to all who were involved in our campaign over recent weeks. It's hard to believe that it's only five weeks since we got together in Charlestown to launch our campaign and it's a credit to everyone that in so short a time we've done what we've done.

Make no mistake about it, what we've achieved is ground breaking and has created a base that can be built on for the future. Take a look at the figures for our result in this election and by all means savour them, but also know this. The core Lib Dem vote in St Austell & Newquay is probably no more than about 3,000 and the rest are mainly people who tended to open their doors to me and greet me with the words, "I've always been 'Labour' but...". Amazingly a great many of the Lib Dem voters I've met during this election even told me that they were big fans of Jeremy Corbyn!

None of these things were surprising given the previous results and also the 'tactical voting' websites telling people to vote Lib Dem. Even the Daily Mirror was advising Labour supporters to vote Lib Dem in our constituency. Now imagine how well we could have done if all of those had asked people to vote Labour instead. Well now we've claimed second place and put a gap of 4,000 behind us to the Lib Dems we can expect that support in future.

Now we've built our base let's enjoy the moment. Going forward I'm also looking forward to bigger and even more successful battles with the Conservatives across Cornwall.

Again, many thanks.
